Bewoners en anderen die betrokken zijn bij het Markdal hebben samen met de provincie Noord-Brabant, Waterschap Brabantse Delta en de gemeenten Alphen-Chaam en Breda de afgelopen jaren een plan ontwikkeld voor het Markdal. Hierin krijgen natuur en water meer ruimte. Ook zijn er onorthodoxe oplossingen gevonden voor situaties op het gebied van ruimtelijke ordening die al langere tijd vast zaten. Er is een omgevingsplan gemaakt. Deze manier van werken past in de geest van de nieuwe Omgevingswet.

Omdat de Omgevingswet pas in 2019 van kracht wordt, moeten wel de normale bestemmingsplanprocedures gevolgd worden. De Vereniging Markdal heeft daarom met de gemeente Breda een bestemmingsplan voor het hele Markdal gemaakt. Dit bestemmingsplan gaat de normale procedure voor bestemmingsplannen doorlopen. Naar verwachting zal het plan eind mei vrijgegeven worden door de colleges van Breda en Alphen-Chaam.
